What Can ChatGPT Do?

From one senior to another

If you're wondering whether ChatGPT is just another complicated tech toy you'll never figure out, let me put your mind at ease: it's actually a patient helper that talks back. I'm Ash, and I use it almost every day—not to be fancy, but to save time and take some mental load off.

Think of ChatGPT as a kind, tireless assistant who can write a polite letter to your insurance, summarize a confusing medical bill, or help you find the right words for a birthday card. It doesn't judge, doesn't rush, and it's free to start. You just type in a question or a request, and it gives you a thoughtful answer.

Everyday Help: Letters, Lists, and Explanations

One of the biggest worries I hear from friends is about writing—whether it's a complaint to a company, a note to a grandchild, or a list of questions for the doctor. ChatGPT can draft those for you. You just say, 'Write a polite letter to my pharmacy asking about a prescription delay,' and it gives you a draft you can tweak. You're in control—you can change any word before you use it.

Another example: I asked it to 'explain what a deductible is like I'm 75 and never understood insurance.' It gave me a clear, friendly answer with an example. No jargon, no shame. You can ask it to simplify anything—recipes, instructions, even news articles.

Remembering Things and Staying Organized

We all have those moments where we forget why we walked into a room. ChatGPT can help you keep track of things. For instance, I asked it to 'create a weekly pill schedule for my heart meds and blood pressure meds, with times and notes about food.' It made a clean table I could print out. You don't have to rely on your memory—just ask it to organize your thoughts.

It's also great for making simple to-do lists or packing lists for a trip. I used it to list everything I'd need for an overnight hospital stay—charger, slippers, book, snacks—and it even suggested things I'd forgotten.

Getting Started Safely and Simply

If you'd like to try it, here's the easiest way: go to chat.openai.com on a computer or ask a family member to help you download the 'ChatGPT' app on a tablet or phone. Start with something small and private—like 'Suggest three easy dinner ideas with chicken and rice' or 'Write a funny joke about retirement.' No account needed if you're just browsing, but a free account saves your chats.

A few safety tips I follow: never share personal info like your Social Security number or bank details. Treat it like a helpful stranger—useful, but not your lawyer or doctor. And remember, you can always say 'I don't like that answer, try again' or just close the window. You're the boss. Give it a try with one tiny question today—you might be surprised how nice it feels to have an instant helper.
