How Do I Stop Annoying Pop-Ups and Ads Online?

From one senior to another

Most pop-ups come from the websites you visit, not from AI or your device breaking. Your web browser (Safari, Chrome, or Edge) usually has a built-in pop-up blocker you just need to turn on, and most of the worst ones disappear right away.

The trickiest part is telling the difference between a normal ad and a fake warning trying to scare you into clicking. That's the one to watch for.

Turning On the Built-In Blocker

On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, then Safari, and turn on "Block Pop-ups." On a Windows computer using Chrome, click the three dots in the corner, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Site Settings, and turn Pop-ups to "Blocked." This alone stops most of the problem.

Spotting a Fake Warning

A real virus warning never appears as a flashing pop-up telling you to call a phone number. If you ever see one that says your device is infected and gives you a number to call, close the browser window entirely (or restart the device) rather than clicking anything on it — it's designed to alarm you into acting fast.

When Pop-Ups Keep Coming Back

If they persist across many different websites, an ad-blocking extension for your browser can help, or a family member can help you check for any unwanted extra program that may have been installed. This is also a good moment to be extra cautious about scam messages in general, since the two often go together.
